Before our dog gives birth, there are a
lot of different things we do to make her comfortable. For the two weeks
prior to birth, we feed her high quality puppy food mixed with milk
replacer. This helps her calcium levels and makes for healthy fat
puppies. The most important thing we do is ask our Lord to bless our
litter and our Momma dog! We start bringing the mom
inside about a week before the puppies are born. She sleeps in the
whelping box right where she will have the puppies. This way, she knows
the area she is in when the pups are born.
The day beforehand, she spends the day in
a fort that any little boy would envy! Here she is in the "blanketed
kennel!"

| My youngest sister then decided
that it was still too 'open,' so she added a roof! |

Are we sure that
Misty isn't just faking it for all this attention she's
getting???? This is a fort every 5 year old dreams of making and
every mother dreads. |
| When we know that she is getting
close, we lay out a big comforter on the floor for her to whelp
on. Next, when we are sure that she is even closer to whelping,
we cover the comforter with pillowcases. This way, when she has
a puppy, we can pull out the dirty pillowcase and put a new one
down. And believe me, the pillowcases get dirty!!!!!! Don't use
any pillowcase intended for your guest bedroom! |

This year, we figured out the
neatest design for a whelping box. To read more,
click here! We don't let our
female have the puppies in the whelping box. That way, there
isn't blood and amniotic fluid all over the sides of the box.
You can throw the comforter and pillowcases in the washing
machine....you can't throw the whelping box in there!!!
Once the pups are outside momma,
we move the family into the whelping box. |
