Head:

Skull should be fairly long, with broad, full cranium. Ears should be set moderately low on the head, should be long, and when drawn out, should reach nearly, if not almost all the way, to the end of the nose. Eyes should be large, set well apart, soft, and, well, hound-like! They usually have a gentle, pleading expression and are brown or hazel in color. The muzzle should be of medium length, straight and square. Defects of the head would be a very flat skull that is narrow across the top;  eyes small and sharp, or prominent and protruding; a long muzzle; ears short or set high.

Body:

Neck should rise free and light from shoulders, strong, and of medium length. The throat should be clean and free from folds of skin, a slight wrinkle below the angle of the jaw, may be allowable. Defects of neck and throat would be a short, cloddy neck and throat showing folds of skin to a degree termed "throatiness."

Shoulders should be sloping, clean, muscular, not heavy, conveying the idea of freedom of action, activity, and strength. Chest deep and broad, but not so broad as to interfere with free play of shoulders. Defects: straight, upright shoulders; chest disproportionately wide.

Back short, muscular, strong. Ribs giving abundance of lung room. Defects: long or swayed back; flat ribs.

Forelegs straight with plenty of bone in proportion to size of the Beagle. Pasterns short and straight. Feet close, round and firm with a full, hard pad. Defects out at the elbows; knees knuckled forward; forelegs crooked; feet long, open, or spreading.

Hips and thighs strong and well muscled, giving abundance of propelling power. Hocks firm, symmetrical and moderately bent. Defects: cow hocked, or straight hocks. Lack of muscle.

Tail set moderately high, carried gaily, but not turned forward over the back, with slight curve. Short as compared with size of Beagle. Defects: long tail; rat tail with absence of brush.

Coat:

should be hard, hound coat of medium length.

Color:

any true hound color. Common colors are tri colored, or two colored (black and white, lemon and white, etc.)

General appearance:

should be that of a miniature Foxhound, solid and big for his inches. Wear-and-tear look of a hound that can last in the chase, and follow his prey to the death.
